Virgin Galactic has recently opened and launched its Spaceport in New Mexico! This monumental event for space travel was marked with grand festivities graced by Sir Richard Branson himself.

"Looking skyward, more than 800 guests marveled at Virgin Galactic’s commercial space vehicles as they soared through the skies of southern New Mexico during the dedication ceremonies of Virgin Galactic’s new home at Spaceport America. The flight of WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo was the highlight of a spectacular ceremony which featured the dedication of the Sir Norman Foster-designed building and announcements of new scientific and educational customers for the world’s first commercial space line."

New Mexico, “The Land of Enchantment,” is home to Spaceport America, which will be Virgin Galactic’s headquarters, and where its space flights will be launched.

The state is funding this $200M project, which is now under construction and will span a 27 sq. mile area in southern NM. The facilities will certainly be cutting edge, a dream for experienced and fledgling astronauts to be working with.

There is a newly completed 2-mile long "Governor Bill Richardson Spaceway" dedicated by the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) to represent significant developments towards finally bringing commercial customers into space from the beautiful desert of New Mexico.

Here's more news about the test flights:

At 7am on May 25, 2011, SpaceShipTwo landed safely after having completed a second "feather" flight.

In the next couple of weeks, another glide flight is hoped to be completed, which will mean the completion of a series of 6 successful test flights in about a month, which has never happened before.

All the data and experiences from the recent flurry of test flights will now undergo analysis. Engineers will be addressing any issues arising from this, as well as performing detailed vehicle checks as they prepare the spaceship and carrier aircraft for the next phase of flight testing.

We are certainly proud of the Scaled team for their hard work which has resulted in many flights as possible in such a short time period.

What you see here is an image of the successful first feathered flight of SpaceShipTwo.

"Early on Wednesday 4th May 2011, in the skies above Mojave Air and Spaceport CA, SpaceShipTwo, the world's first commercial spaceship, demonstrated its unique reentry ‘feather’ configuration for the first time. This test flight, the third in less than two weeks, marks another major milestone on the path to powered test flights and commercial operations."
